Are you aware of the Chicago-based designer who provided costume wardrobes for some of Chicago’s theater communities? Born in 1959, in Detroit, Michigan. Michael Alan Stein has a charm in his costumes that makes them fit for the stage. At 11 years old, Michael wrote a fan letter to fashion tycoon Anne Klein, to which she responded with encouragement. Inspired by Anne, Michael started his career at the infamed Parsons School of Design and the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. Michael’s charming costumes were a great companion to any performance. His costumes graced the likes of Guthrie Theatre, Alvin Ailey Theatre, Goodman Theatre, and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and also could be seen on the big screen in movies like Spike Lee’s 1999 Summer of Sam and Losing Isaiah 1995.
In 2012, Michael returned to Chicago, IL from a hiatus from fashion and released his 2012 tango-inspired fashion line that showed at the SP NYFW show of that year. In recent years, he served on the advisory board for the School of Fine Arts at Dominican University in River Forest, IL.. Michael’s passion for fashion was driven by making women feel good. He cites that his brand was created to “seamlessly merge his professional background and understanding of the sophisticated woman’s desire for comfortably stylish clothing.” Michael passed in 2021 after battling an illness.
