Fall Winter 27 predictions at NYFW saw 1920s opulence, gothic romanticism, and 1980s power suits. Some of those trends carried onto the Spring Summer 2027 runways, and some got replaced by presently more favorable fads. Black designers shone especially bright this year, forging new roads for fashion and culture at large. Whatever the future for this next season of fashion holds, we’ve named and followed five top black designers for this NYFW recap to get a peek at what we’ll all be wearing next season.
1. Sergio Hudson

The ‘Hudson brand was designed on adhering to the woman in charge. Sharp silhouettes, bold colors, draping fabrics, and cinched waistlines are just a few signifiers of a Sergio Hudson collection. At the Rainbow Room in the Rockefeller Center, Sergio Hudson’s Spring 2027 was no exception. An homage paid to James Bond and espionage, after nearly 73 years of Bondsmen and Bondwomen, Sergio Hudson reimagined the men as counterparts to the women. Notably dressing the men in famous Bondgirl-inspired outfits (such as the silk one famously worn by Madeleine Swann) the men got to wear silks and cottons and the women in strong Bonds reminiscent pieces. Infamously, the September 13, 2026 show marked 10 years of the Sergio Hudson brand.

2. Laquan Smith

Laquan Smith is widely known as a designer to the stars: just a few top dogs on his pedigree include Beyoncé, Kim Kardashian, Zendaya, and Rihanna, to name just a few. This upcoming winter the Queens Newyork native craftsman is taking his talents to the big screen as he collaborates with Paramount Pictures for the Gina Prince-Blythewood-directed movie, Children of Blood and Bone. On September 16, Laquan Smith brought palm trees to the Brookfield Place Mall to showcase his three-piece capsule collection for the film. Comprised of deer prints, earthy browns, and snake prints made the collection ferociously fabulous. Giving us a taste of what we can expect on screen. Nene Leakes, Ayra Starr, and The Blood and Bone cast were just a few of the fierce guests filling the seats at the NYFW show.

3. Advisry

The 1970s were a revolutive period for the fashion world and the world at large, paramounted influence by no decade to come before or after. This is likely why the decade was at the center of Advisry’s September 16th, NYFW show. The Flat Iron district titled show “America Still” was an homage to the writings and speeches of James Baldwin who despite all his gripes with the country, still held America to the highest standard. The show was broken into three acts with a range of fashion pieces representing the period of social pressure, unrest, and the nations collective grit. Miltary jackets, crocodile leather caplets, and sequined basketball shorts were just a few items to unravel this journey through history and the Black experience of the 1970s.

4. Nardos Design

Flashing lights, expensive venues, gorgeous men and women. The nature of the runway is typically steeped in glamour. In her September 12, 2026 fashion show, Nardos Imam brought nature to the runway. The Plaza Hotel was graced with flowered lace and silk exotic dresses, inspired by Nardos Imam’s visits to European museums and art houses. In this Spring Summer 2027, fashion show Imam spotlights floral as not just a decorative print but an architect of nature. Nature is not simply decorative, but an essential source of artistic expression. A beauty of birth, life and aesthetic each meticulously crafted piece could live in the conservatory and on the runway.

5. Amari Carter

Big hats, pearls, and bowed socks- “Sunday best” is a phrase familiar to every churchgoer who swore by pulling out their best to praise the lord every Sunday morn’. That’s because, reaching back as early as slavery the act of coming to church was a biblical part of Black livelihood in itself. Sunday was a time of rest, peace, and community. On Sunday September 13th, fashion house Amari Carter took her fashion show attendees from the pew to the runway as models strutted down the runway in pieces that were memories of her childhood church experience displaying bold styling, sensual details, and daring silhouettes for everyday wear.
Ps. We wouldn’t wear these to the church house.
