Flowers Shall Grow in Rain featuring Journey Powell

Journey Powell

Black Fashion Week proudly spotlights Journey Aliah Powell — a 20-year-old fashion model, writer, and English major at Spelman College — as she presents her debut live fashion exhibition, Flowers Shall Grow in Rain, on August 2nd from 5 PM to 7 PM at Hatch 41 (4131 South State Street, Chicago, IL).

What began as Journey’s senior thesis — inspired by one of her favorite childhood stories, Alice in Wonderland — has blossomed into a full-scale fashion showcase where literature and style converge. One defining moment that inspired her vision is the iconic scene from the novel and Disney’s 1951 adaptation, where Alice encounters the Caterpillar. When he sternly demands, “Who are you?” and Alice fumbles for an answer, the Caterpillar becomes agitated and eventually transforms into a butterfly — a symbol of change and beauty that deeply resonated with Journey.

Today, that inspiration takes center stage in Flowers Shall Grow in Rain, a fashion exhibition divided into three acts, each representing a phase in a butterfly’s metamorphosis. The show explores themes of identity, transformation, and the powerful beauty found in discomfort and growth. This isn’t just a fashion show — it’s a layered storytelling experience rooted in philosophy and artistic expression.

Drawing from her own journey in the modeling industry, Journey aims to create an inclusive and empowering space where everyone involved feels valued. Her mission is to help individuals express their best selves while fostering connection within Chicago’s creative community. Flowers Shall Grow in Rain is a celebration of collaboration, growth, and the art of becoming. Featured designers include Bug Hemphill, Tommie Ibiza Anderson, Megan Wong, Wylan Harris, Nia White, and Khalese Alexander.
